We're not going to release Red Hat Developer Studio anymore. Introducing JBoss Developer Studio 1.0!
I'm pleased to announce today the General Availability of JBoss Developer Studio 1.0 for Windows and Linux. JBoss Developer Studio provides a certified open source development environment that includes and integrates:
- Eclipse
- Eclipse Tooling
- JBoss Enterprise Application Platform
One of the main benefits of using JBoss Developer Studio is that it pre-integrates and certifies tooling and runtime components together. When you use JBoss Developer Studio:
- You don't have to worry about whether all the plugins you use will work together or require incompatible dependencies.
- You'll have the assurance that all your runtime libraries like Hibernate or Seam are properly matched with each other and already installed into JBoss Application Server.
- You'll know that the particular Eclipse plugins you have work precisely with the runtime libraries and containers in your development environment.
- You can easily upgrade to new technologies because all the matching tooling, runtime components, and dependencies will be provided to you in an integrated installer.
- You can deploy your development platform with confidence because Red Hat supports JBoss Enterprise Application Platform releases for 5 years.
Many of you know that we had released a couple betas under the name, Red Hat Developer Studio. During the beta process, we found that it would be advantageous to leverage the powerful JBoss brand more clearly. So, as we release this new offering, we are officially christening it JBoss Developer Studio.
JBoss Developer Studio 1.0 is available now as a subscription offering for $99. To summarize, JBoss Developer Studio includes:
- Eclipse
- Eclipse Tooling
- JBoss Enterprise Application Platform
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- RHN Access
- Support for Windows and Linux

That's sad. We trust in Red Hat because Red Hat believes in Open Source and GPL and the freedom. I would prefer to have it called Red Hat Developer Studio...
Is there a free trial version?
JBoss is a part of Red Hat, and we all believe strongly in open source, the GPl and freedom! In fact, JBoss Developer Studio is 100% open source and released under the GPL v2 License. Furthermore, we partnered to bring proprietary technology like Exadel's Studio Pro into open source at jboss.org so that we could open up its development community and provide freedom for all in its use and development.
We do not have a limited trial of JBoss Developer Studio. However, because JBoss Developer Studio is 100% open source, you can get a preview of its capabilities by checking out the JBoss Tools open source project: http://labs.jboss.com/tools/. This won't provide you with the integration with JBoss Enterprise Application Platform or the certified installer or Eclipse. But, you can check out the tooling capabilities.
Please don't tell us it is GPLv2 100% open source, because it is neither free or open source tool at all.
It is proprietary solution (like myeclipse) with paid subscription.

JBoss Developer Studio is 100% open source--we distribute it under GPL v2 and provide all the source code for each JBoss Developer Studio release.
Acually that's JBoss Tools what can be called an open source project, not JBoss Developer Studio...
If it really is 100% GPL, then how can I get the sources of the installer and "3rd party plugins bundled and configured"?

JBoss Developer Studio itself is 100% open source. We make the source code for it available to all customers who download the binaries, as required by the GPL.
